Catering Cart Security a Growing Concern - defendAir has the answer

Something that within the industry we have to be aware of but is rarely openly discussed made the front page of 'USA Today', a survey conducted by the Unite Here union representing employees at catering units across America revealed that "1 in 4 airline caterers say the food carts are vulnerable to unauthorized people could getting into their kitchens and trucks, and the same percentage warned that someone could place contraband on a food cart" Furthermore this report was also submitted to the US government's Transport Security Administration two years after several passengers discovered needles in sandwiches on flights from Amsterdam, and a prior incident when 10kg of cocaine was found inside a packed food cart bound to depart Miami.

It was precisely to combat and identify situations like these that the defendAir system was developed for, read more on the report and article here.

defendAir – AlphaLSG Flight Trials with Monarch a Resounding Success

The defendAir Flight Trials with AlphaLSG and Monarch Airlines has concluded and proved to be a huge success. The defendAir system has not only demonstrated that it is capable of meeting all of its original claims as to its capabilities, but also staff involved at all levels form both AlphaLSG and Monarch found defendAir easy to adopt, use and integrate into their existing workflows and procedures.

The trial flights were conducted on alternating days on the same route over an extended 3-month period with an increased focus on stock discrepancies to provide an accurate measure for the existing securing methods against the new defendAir approach. Results from the trial flights can be seen on our defendAir infographic and include a consistently lower average flight discrepancy value on defendAir flights; continual month-on-month reductions in stock discrepancies from feedback on performance provided to the crew from the system; improved adherence to security and customs regulations; and a decrease in the average value of missing stock. Not to mention that it saved using nearly 1500 disposable plastic seals over the course of only 38 flights.

The cost savings and loss reductions offered by the system have been described as a 'no-brainer' by AlphaLSG, who are keen to take up the system and roll it out during the next winter programme; and the Monarch base management team, crew and their union and loss prevention team all think the system is fantastic and are very happy working with it. Monarch's forward thinking has likely resulted in them being the first airline to benefit from this new system!

defendAir Flight Trials Continue with AlphaLSG & Monarch Airlines

Initial feedback from all parties involved in the December flight trials has been very positive. The Monarch cabin crew have been unanimously supportive and enthusiastic due to its simplicity, speed and ease of use; as has the AlphaLSG bond staff as it has integrated with their existing packing procedures with minimal impact on their processes.

The detail and precision of the information recorded has substantiated the capabilities of the seal insofar as it has identified anomalies in cart use and enabled Transeal to make recommendations relating to potential cart vulnerability. From the information provided to us initially there has been a noticeable reduction in reported discrepancies from the time defendAir was introduced in December.

These encouraging results have created a great deal of positive interest – not just from those directly involved but also from other airlines now becoming aware of the system. Trial flights are scheduled to continue into March 2014.
